[0:00] Hello and welcome to this podcast series on family wealth and legacy strategy.
[0:04] My name is Mark Haynes-Daniel. I'm the founder and chairman of the Raffles Family Wealth Trust,
[0:09] a specialist advisory boutique working from London and Singapore and around the world
[0:15] to work with family leaders and members of all generations of the family
[0:19] to work together toward the best possible future for their own families.
[0:24] And as you think about strategy, and particularly in the area of legacy families
[0:29] and their greater enterprise, their businesses, philanthropies, investment portfolios, etc.,
[0:34] is not necessarily a happy picture across the board.
[0:38] A number of families have worked hard to create their wealth
[0:42] and then struggle to maintain the wealth and maintain family unity across generations.
[0:49] As we all know, about 70% of generational transitions
[0:53] fail to meet the full set of objectives of those passing the wealth to the next generation.
[0:58] There's the famous expression, riches to rags in three generations, that exists in one form or another in almost every country and language around the world.
[1:07] So when you look at those examples of success and failure, you have to ask yourself, what's missing?
[1:12] What is it that separates the winners from the losers in this all-important area of preserving family wealth, strengthening the family, and creating a series of successful generations which allows you to go from riches to riches across generations?
[1:32] What's missing for a lot of people is learning about a topic that's not taught in schools,
[1:39] that's something that we often don't have exposure to ourselves, which is strategy.
[1:44] And one thing that a lot of families hope for is a great future for their family, their
[1:49] family wealth, their family business, and all aspects of their enterprise, but they
[1:53] don't necessarily have a strategy behind it.
[1:57] And there's a very famous expression, hope is not a strategy.
[2:01] Everyone hopes for a better future, and only a very small number of selected, hardworking families design and implement successful strategies that work to their advantage over the long term.
[2:12] Every family, especially in today's environment, is facing a range of big challenges, both from within the family and from the external environment.
[2:22] environment. So putting together strategy means you need to look internally and externally with
[2:28] expertise and taking a comprehensive approach to strategy. One of the key characteristics
[2:34] of strategy for legacy families is that it's multidimensional. It requires addressing soft
[2:41] issues, hard issues, family across generations. So it's a comprehensive multidimensional approach
[2:48] which needs to be designed for and played out across multiple generations. And that kind of
[2:54] long-term strategy is alien to a lot of us in the modern world, where short-term, everything is
[3:01] getting shorter and shorter, strategy cycles are getting shorter in businesses and technology,
[3:07] but families are forever. And putting in place the right strategy for your own family
[3:11] means understanding lots of individual elements and pulling them together in a holistic framework
[3:17] that allows you to bring your family together, to protect and grow your wealth, to strengthen
[3:24] your family, to share a vision for the future, to identify those values that you need to build,
[3:31] which will create a culture which is sustainable, to identify those values and behaviors which are
[3:36] not good and positive and constructive, so you can stop those elements of behavior that will
[3:42] bring your family into a higher risk situation and put in place the very complicated three phases
[3:49] of generational transition that allow you to bring the best of the past into the future using not
[3:56] just best practices, because some of the best practices from the past are already outdated,
[4:01] but designing and applying creative new and innovative next practices that will work well
[4:09] in the very different world of the future. So strategy is essential. Strategy can be defined
[4:15] as the art and science of informed decision-making and action to create a better future, to achieve
[4:23] a desired vision or achieve a set of objectives of greater purpose, vision, and values over time.
[4:30] And putting in place a strategic process that looks at the right content over time, involves the
[4:36] family may bring in experts, but needs to be documented, shared, and agreed, and spelled out
[4:43] in very clear terms, what you're trying to accomplish, why, who's going to do what, when,
[4:49] where, why, and how, and bring together all of the elements of strategy, tactics, resources,
[4:56] shared effort, and inspiration to create the best possible future for your family in a very
[5:02] strategic and effective manner.

[5:23] I look forward to hearing from you and to continuing what I hope will be a very useful
[5:29] set of discussions about your own family, how these ideas can work to help you define and
[5:36] implement your strategies to work toward the best possible future for your family, its wealth,
[5:42] its greater enterprises, and the individuals within your family in all living generations,
[5:48] and even those unborn generations yet to come.
