[0:00] Hello and welcome to this introductory podcast on family wealth and legacy matters.
[0:05] My name is Mark Haynes-Daniel. I'm the founder and chairman of the Raffles Family Wealth Trust,
[0:11] a boutique advisory company based in Singapore and London, serving clients around the world for
[0:17] about 20 years now. As I think about these matters, it's perhaps useful to share some of my own
[0:24] background so you understand where I'm coming from and where some of the insights and ideas
[0:29] have developed over time to create what I believe is the world's leading e-learning platform,
[0:36] a source and series of books and articles, and these podcasts on the entire range of issues
[0:44] related to creating a successful legacy and turning a financial fortune into an enduring
[0:51] family strength and legacy over time. So where do I come from? My family came from the United
[0:59] States. My ancestors came from England in 1635 to Boston in what was then the Massachusetts Bay
[1:06] Colony, and my family has essentially been in New England ever since. I've benefited from quite a
[1:13] long and kind of exhausting education when I think about it, which includes the Phillips Exeter
[1:18] Academy, where we've been attending for four generations now, Amherst College, which I liked
[1:23] very much in Western Massachusetts. Spending some time in Paris at the Sorbonne and at the
[1:29] Institute of Political Studies known as Sciences Po. Then spending some time at Oxford as a
[1:35] Marshall Scholar where I got to a BA and MA in jurisprudence, fancy word for law. And my final
[1:41] degree is a Juris Doctor degree from the Harvard Law School. That is a university where my family
[1:47] has been attending for five generations. I'm the fourth of five generations that have had
[1:52] experience at Harvard as students beginning in 1863 and just finishing recently and perhaps more
[2:01] to come in the future. In addition to that very, very wonderful education, I have quite a broad
[2:09] international business experience as well. Following law school, I decided not to be a
[2:14] lawyer and went to work for a corporate strategy consulting company, one of the top three in the
[2:19] world called Bain & Company, originally working in Boston, but then working in London, Zurich,
[2:25] Singapore, and sometime in the Eastern European offices as well. I was there for about 20 years,
[2:31] became a director. In the middle, I had a three-year break to be an M&A banker in London and
[2:37] Paris. And following the Bain experience, I was the president of a publicly listed investment
[2:42] company in Singapore. Over that time, I spent a lot of time in the air and worked on assignments
[2:51] or with clients in 81 countries around the world, which is North America, Europe, both Eastern and
[3:01] Western Europe, Middle East, and across almost every country in Asia. So it was a very rich and
[3:07] interesting career that focused for about half the time on private and family-owned businesses.
[3:13] So for many years, I have that experience in watching the business and the families behind
[3:19] the businesses grow, transition, and achieve successes and face challenges over time in many,
[3:26] many different countries. So that experience has been both very, very rewarding and useful
[3:32] and creating the platform that we have today.
[3:36] So beyond the business side of things, the direct business jobs,
[3:40] I've also served as a director, a non-executive independent director
[3:44] of some private and family companies as well,
[3:47] the largest being Olam International in Singapore,
[3:50] which now has sales of around $25 billion.
[3:53] Very successful company, very exciting, very responsible,
[3:57] excellent management team, very useful board of directors experience,
[4:00] and really a company that reflects a lot of the challenges that companies face going from a medium-sized family company
[4:08] to a world-leading company, in that case, in the soft commodities sector.
[4:13] I also have been a main board director at EDNF Mann, a privately owned company in the United Kingdom, founded in 1783,
[4:20] and also on other companies in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia over time.
[4:25] And really what that's provided is a platform for addressing the full range of issues that families face in moving from a financial fortune to an enduring family legacy.
[4:39] What we're really about at the Raffles Family Wealth Trust is to create an advisory capability to work with families, family members, and their greater enterprises, their businesses, their wealth management portfolios, their philanthropies, to create a coherent strategy, which is state of the art and encourages, includes, but even goes beyond traditional best practices.
[5:06] because when you're in a world of change like we are now,
[5:10] some of the best practices from the past are still very valid,
[5:13] but others have been outdated,
[5:15] like tools that have become dulled and not so relevant over time.
[5:19] You move from best practices
[5:22] or a selection of the best of the best practices
[5:24] to the creation and application of next practices,
[5:28] those innovative and creative approaches
[5:30] which will work better in the world of the future
[5:33] than practices from the past that no longer serve their overall objective of giving you
[5:40] the best possible toolkit to address the problems you face and the opportunities you face
[5:45] going forward. So really what we're offering here in this podcast series are bite-sized pieces of
[5:54] experience, knowledge, wisdom, examples, and practical steps you can take to move your family
[6:03] forward so you have long-term success. Creating a legacy is really addressing family wealth
[6:13] in the financial sense, but also much more than pure financial wealth. It involves looking at the
[6:19] family, its history, culture, wealth structuring, investments, philanthropies, businesses,
[6:25] family relationships, the family office, looking at all of those elements of a coherent approach
[6:31] to creating the best possible legacy and the best possible future for you and your family.
[6:39] So what we will do is put together some frameworks that we've used over time, give you examples,
[6:44] answer your questions as we go forward, and provide you with a roadmap, a very specific
[6:51] practical roadmap to get to where you want to go in the future on a long-term basis,
[6:58] but having specific successes along the way. That will mean putting together the right
[7:03] strategies in a holistic framework, educating your next generation, exercising leadership,
[7:09] communicating well, and developing your own best practices to create your own best possible future
[7:17] for your own family. And along the way, we'll be looking together at things like family risk of
[7:24] all kinds, taking advantage of family opportunities of all kinds, and achieving your purpose,
[7:31] understanding your vision, setting out your plans in a very practical way. If you look at the team
[7:37] that we have, which you can find on the website rafflestrust.com, you'll see that we have not
[7:42] academics or inexperienced younger people trying to step up to very senior advisory roles,
[7:50] but some of the world's leading practitioners in wealth structuring, in education of the next
[7:56] generation, in looking at family business, in looking at international investment portfolios,
[8:01] and looking at all the tools and opportunities that you can look at to help your own next
[8:08] generation to be fully prepared to master the challenges of today and of tomorrow, and to bring
[8:14] your whole family to a level of unity, harmony, focus, and success that will be applied today
[8:21] to benefit your family across many, many generations into the future, even those not yet born.
[8:27] So what we have to offer is working for you to your very unique family specifications and desires to create something unique, lasting, and valuable.
[8:38] So we measure our success by your results, and our purpose is really to help you to define and achieve the best possible future for your own family, the members within it, and that greater legacy to which we all aspire and to which you can really work toward in a practical way.
[8:59] Hope is not a strategy.
[9:01] What we can bring you is strategy that is both practical and successful for you and all the members of your family for now and long into the future.
[9:10] If you like what you hear and want to learn more, please follow these podcasts or contact us at MHD, for Mark Haynes Danielle, at rafflestrust.com.
[9:22] We'll respond to all those questions that we can, but we invite you to join us as a participant in the educational activities on the RAFLs Legacy Learning website and to talk to us about advisory mandates and the activities, workshops, etc., that we'll be holding around the world over the coming years, which will allow you to work in person with myself and members of our team to define very clearly what it is you'd like to do,
[9:51] how you would like to do it and how you can take advantage of the opportunities
[9:56] and manage the risks and challenges that you'll face along the way.
